Forum on Education and disability

Monday 29th @ 7pm,
University Center
Room 227

Forum on Education and Disability — This forum will have a panel of education experts from K-12 schools, community colleges, and the University of Tennessee to discuss challenges facing students with disabilities in public education. Discussion of this topic has become increasingly relevant with the ongoing education reform in the country, particularly concerning the Common Core initiative. There will be an opportunity for audience members to ask the panelists questions.

Disability Stories, Questions, and Answers

Tuesday 30th @ 7pm
University Center
Shiloh Room

The subject of disability is often a taboo topic. Thus, this forum aims to provide a space where members of the campus community may seek answers to their burning questions about disability. Students and community members will present a short monologue to entertain and inform the audience about life as a person with a disability. The audience can then ask whatever tasteful questions about disability they are too afraid to normally ask. This is an artistic, interpersonal way to introduce people to disability culture and promote awareness.

Trisha Downing on her camp for empowering the disabled

Wednesday 1st @ 7 pm
University Center
Ballroom

Trish Downing is a wheelchair athlete and director of Camp Discovery, a camp for women 21-years-old and up who are full-time wheelchair users. She aims to redefine participants’ lives through fitness and recreation. Overall, her camp provides a rare and unique forum for women with disabilities to discuss their challenges and lives while also providing them with an outlet through exercise that benefits them both physically and emotionally. While a camp for adults with disabilities seems commonplace, many of these people rarely have the opportunity to meet and converse about the shared challenges they face, especially as they age. This camp also focuses on women with disabilities, one of the most marginalized groups in America. Trish Downing’s talk, therefore, will touch on many topics pertinent to college students, including: women’s issues, health and wellness, and disability.

RJ Mitten from Breaking Bad

Thursday 2nd @ 7 pm
University Center
Auditorium

CDA is partnering with the Issues Committee to present RJ Mitte, an actor with cerebral palsy and co-star of the hit television series Breaking Bad, to talk about how disability is shown in the media. Mitte’s character was groundbreaking for multiple reasons. It is very rare for characters with disabilities to appear on TV or film. It is even more rare for a character with a disability to be portrayed by an actor with that disability. However, even with characters with disabilities are shown, the disability is portrayed as something the character must overcome in order to be feel accepted by society.

Knoxville accessibility, pizza, trivia, and prizes

Friday 3rd @ 7pm
International House
Great Room

Each year the City of Knoxville hosts an Accessibility Symposium in the Civic Coliseum that offers various forums about disability issues and areas for local vendors and organizations to exhibit their accessible products. The dates for this event and Disability Week have been aligned to attract more participants for both events. CDA will also host a booth at the Symposium to showcase our efforts in increasing the accessibility and inclusivity of the University of Tennessee. In the evening, we will host a trivia night on campus with questions about disability. Students will be allowed to use cell phones or other electronic devices to look up answers to the questions. Our main goal is to increase undergraduates’ knowledge about disability in a fun and engaging way.
